alternativeThe tourbillon is a device designed to compensate for the effects of gravity when the watch is in vertical positions. The trick consists in mounting the watch’s regulating organ (meaning the balance, balance-spring, lever and escape-wheel) inside a rotating carriage that spins on its own axis. In 2003, Chopard Manufacture presented its first tourbillon, encasing the calibre L.U.C 1.02. This movement was the world’s first hand-wound tourbillon equipped with four barrels. The total length of the four barrel-springs placed end to end is 1.88 metres, which enables the calibre to store up enough energy to operate without interruption for approximately 216 hours (nine days). Another distinctive feature of this exceptional movement is the four-arm “Variner” balance. This technology exclusively devised by Chopard serves to regulate the inertia of the balance by carefully adjusting the position of the four tiny inertia-blocks driven into the balance in parallel with its arbor – thereby further enhancing the reliability and accuracy of the watch. Having mastered the tourbillon technology, Chopard is today able to present a full range of exclusive tourbillons, based on this outstanding movement. All of them are available in limited series and are chronometer-certified by the COSC. BACK TO THE L.U.C COLLECTION
