The most prestigious event on the classic racing circuit is set to hold its 11th edition from May 11th to 13th 2018. The Grand Prix de Monaco Historique unites drivers and devotees of historical mechanical engineering in a competition specifically designed for racing cars. Chopard is its sponsor and official timekeeper since 2002, an entirely natural alliance for a Maison of passionate enthusiasts.
On May 11th, 12th and 13th, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique will rattle the windows of Monte Carlo. This classic racing car competition is the most eclectic and prestigious of them all. Held every two years, it follows the exact route of the F1 Grand Prix. On this occasion, 50 years of motor racing history converge on the ‘Rock’ to compete in larger than life speed trials. Drivers engage in fierce battles at the wheel of collector’s cars divided into seven categories. Since 2002, Chopard has been associated with the event as sponsor and official timekeeper.
The oldest competing vehicles date back to the 1930s, when Bugatti ruled supreme on the racing circuits, along with Alfa Romeo. Formula 1 cars from the 1950s, 60s and 70s are the stars of event, with Lola, McLaren and Tyrell models retracing the history of the progress of aerodynamics and engine-related research. Finally, 1960s GT cars from the Ferrari, Maserati, Jaguar and Aston Martin workshops represent the ultimate gentlemen drivers’ spirit. The Grand Prix de Monaco Historique revives the historical vocation of these legendary speed machines, with roaring engines powering drivers to victory. The tight bends of the Condamine, the legendary Rascasse hairpin, the fast tunnel as well as the redoubtably tight St. Dévote turn, are all on the menu of the three days of racing. The dangers are real, both for drivers and their four-wheeled mounts. Competitors reach maximum speeds of 240 km/h. Any overtaking move is a real fight, as always on the narrow track of the Monaco circuit. The authentic and hotly contested competition is the very reason for being of this Grand Prix: an intense and much sought-after race in which speed and victory are a question of panache.
Chopard is inseparably bound up with the world of classic racing. It shares with the Grand Prix de Monaco a passion for fine mechanical engineering, together with precision and rigorous discipline. “As a passionate car-lover, it’s always an honour for me to associate Chopard with the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique every two years. This year brings me even greater pleasure in that I will be taking part personally in the Chopard parade at the wheel of a Porsche 550 Spyder RS. I particularly wish to thank Monaco Automobile Club for the tremendous work it does on behalf of vintage car collectors and for the quality of its organisation.” Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President of Chopard.
In addition to partnering the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique since 2002, the Maison is also official timekeeper of the Mille Miglia since 1988 and official timing partner of Porsche Motorsport since 2014. For Chopard, cars and luxury watches belong to the same world: one of supremely accomplished mechanical engineering. Chopard shares drivers’ passion for precision mechanics and for exceptional objects. Moreover, this partnership stems from an even more personal passion, since Karl-Friedrich is himself a classic car collector and driver. He adds: “This passion was passed on to me by my father, who is a fan of classic cars. In 1987, I went to Italy and discovered the Mille Miglia. I was extremely impressed and realised the fantastic opportunity represented by associating classic racing with Chopard watches.”
For each edition of the Grand Prix since 2002, Chopard has created a limited-edition luxury sports watch. Grand Prix de Monaco Historique 2018 Race Edition luxury watches for men are the ultimate driver’s instruments: power, sporting and sophisticated models paying tribute to the 11th edition of the race. Bodywork inspired by classic racing cars, an ‘engine’ chronometer-certified by the COSC; bright orange or blue accents: these chronographs are a distillation of mechanical refinement, precision and vintage design. Issued in two limited series – one of 250 luxury watch in titanium and stainless steel and the other of 100 sports watch in 18-carat rose gold, titanium and stainless steel –, they embody Chopard’s passion for racing as well as its high watchmaking standards.
