Cannes, May 22nd 2017
Anya Taylor-Joy and George MacKay are the laureates of this new edition of the Trophée Chopard, created 17 years ago by Caroline Scheufele – co-president of the Geneva-based Maison and passionate about film-making – to reward up-and-coming talents of world cinema. They were handed their awards by Charlize Theron, the famous patroness of this edition, at a ceremony that took place on the Chopard Rooftop at the Martinez Hotel on May 22nd 2017.
Chopard has been partnering the Cannes Festival since 1998, and in 2001, under the impetus of Caroline Scheufele and eager to confirm its ongoing support of filmmaking, Chopard created the Trophée Chopard intended as an annual occasion to honour a young actress and a young actor in the making. For its 17th edition, the Trophées, awarded in partnership with Variety magazine, and with the support of the Festival President Pierre Lescure and its Director Thierry Frémaux, were chosen by a jury of professionals composed of actress Salma Hayek, American film producer Lori McCreary, Australian director Garth Davis, along with Caroline Scheufele and Steven Gaydos, Executive Editor of Variety. After extensive deliberations, the jury decided to reward American-born actress Anya Taylor-Joy, notably seen in The Witch and Split, and English actor George MacKay, who caught the limelight in Pride and Captain Fantastic. The radiant South African actress Charlize Theron, 2003 winner of the Oscar for Best actress in a Leading Role and patroness of this 17th edition of the Trophée Chopard, handed them their respective prizes at an intimate ceremony held on May 22nd 2017 at the Chopard Rooftop suite of the Martinez Hotel.
After the award ceremony, Caroline Scheufele honoured the delighted laureates with an exclusive evening hosting the finest names in the film industry, including Marion Cotillard, winner of the Trophée in 2004, along with Colin Firth, Juliette Binoche, Stacy Martin, Aymeline Valade, KouKa, Izabel Goulart and Tatiana Navka. This star-studded array of guests enjoyed a cocktail dinner held in a refined ambiance, while enjoying spectacular views over Cannes and its famous Croisette. The wonderful singer Whinnie Williams gave a private concert that charmed all those who witnessed it. Afterwards, guests were treated to an eclectic set by DJ Nathalie Duchene until the early morning.
