A historical official partner of the Cannes International Film Festival that has been crafting the Palme d'Or since 1998, Chopard has designed a model inspired by the prestigious award. Made of ethical 'Fairmined' certified gold like the Palme d'Or itself, and set with diamonds, the Happy Palm reflects the quintessence of glamour. Five dancing diamonds and a tiny gold palm whirl upon a finely worked mother-of-pearl dial. Perfectly reproducing a delicate palm frond, it is adorned with Urushi lacquer, a resin harvested in Asia from trees bearing the same name and then decorated according to an ancestral Japanese art called maki-e. With infinite precision, the artisan drew and accentuated the motifs of the dial by sprinkling fine gold particles on the wet lacquer. No less than 170 hours of work were required to create this dazzling plant-life motif. The back of the case reveals an equally spectacular work of art, the L.U.C 96.23-L movement. The L.U.C 96.23-L movement is decorated with fine hand-engraved Palmes d’or according to the fleurisanne technique. This art, which originated in the Swiss village where the Chopard manufacture is based, developed in the mid-19th century, the frontiers of its reputation have expanded to China. It is distinctive for its high-relief patterns: the engraver does not gouge out the decoration, but rather makes it stand out” by removing the material around it.
