Chopard official timekeeper to the 1000 Miglia race
34 years as official timekeeper

1000 Miglia 2021

For the 34th consecutive year, Chopard served as world sponsor and official timekeeper to the Mille Miglia race which started on Wednesday 16 June. 375 racers conquered 1,000 miles across the Italian landscape, through more than 200 villages and towns, led by number 43, Andrea Vesco and his co-driver Fabio Salvinelli, in their 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Super Sport.

Tradition with a twist

Following the tradition established in 1927, the loop of the race started in the Italian town of Brescia, under a shining sun. However, its usual direction was reversed, meaning the cars travelled the 1,618 km route in a counter-clockwise direction, from west to east. This was a first since the competition was revived in 1977, but was a regular occurrence during the early editions of the original race, between 1927 and 1957.

Our drivers enjoyed sunny weather as they drove through a difficult route featuring all three of the Cisa, Futa and Raticosa passes for the first time. As tradition has it, the oldest car left the start ramp in Brescia at 1.30 pm, launching the first day of driving across the Cisa Pass until drivers reached the coastal city of Viareggio. Day Two was marked by an early start to cover the 350 km route to Rome, a warm-up for Day Three,

running 400 km through the boot of Italy, on the twisty and demanding roads of the Futa and Raticosa passes. After a night in Bologna, crews made their way back to Brescia via Modena. The challenging route across the three passes was met with success and satisfaction by the racing crews and fans alike, as 341 of the 375 crossed the finish line four days later, reaching the Viale Venezia.

Gentlemen drivers

This year again, Chopard Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele demonstrated his passion for driving classic cars by taking his place on the starting line.
With him in a strawberry-red Mercedes-Benz 300SL 'Gullwing' was motorsport legend Jacky Ickx, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele’s co-driver on more than 15 occasions. From their first race in 1989 in that same 1955 Gullwing, to 2021,

the friendship between these like-minded gentlemen drivers has kept growing, reflecting the spirit and camaraderie that this race is renowned for. The two friends led a team of five Chopard cars that included an Ermini Sport 1100 (1954) driven by Milan-based fashion guru Alessandro Squarzi, a Porsche 356 (1957) with Chopard Ambassador Romain Dumas at the wheel, a beautiful 1956 Alfa Romeo 1900 Super Sport and a Fiat 1100 with rare Zagato bodywork.
