Celebrating 20 Years of Passion with Cannes

With the 70th Edition of the Cannes Film Festival in full swing, we are looking back at the most memorable moments our Maison has shared with the world’s most prestigious film festival, a true celebration of cinema. A love story turning 20 this year.  

1998 - Love at First Sight

The Chopard boutique in Cannes was inaugurated in May 1998 on La Croisette in the presence of Carla Bruni and Eva Herzigova, together with Caroline Scheufele, adding just the right dose of glamour to the French Riviera. The first year of a love story is always a landmark occasion — that year was marked by the creation of the brand-new Palme d'Or, redesigned by the Caroline Scheufele, Creative Director of Chopard. It was awarded to Theo Angelopoulos for his film Eternity and a Day by the Jury chaired by Martin Scorsese. The Trophy was presented by actress Gong Li, radiant in Chopard luxury jewellery. The strong bond between Chopard and Cannes has remained ever since.

2001 - Creation of the Trophée Chopard

This emblematic trophy underscores Chopard's commitment to cinema and young promising actors. Created on the initiative of Caroline Scheufele as part of the partnership with the Festival, it has awarded talents that no longer need to be introduced: from Audrey Tautou and Marion Cotillard to Léa Seydoux and Diane Kruger, without forgetting Bel Powley and John Boyega, the award winners of 2016.  This year, the exquisite Charlize Theron, winner of the Oscar for Best Actress in 2003,  will be patroness of the Trophée Chopard ceremony.

2007 - Introducing the Red Carpet Collection

To celebrate the 60th Edition of the Film Festival marking 10 years of partnership, Caroline Scheufele developed an exclusive Red Carpet diamond jewellery Collection showcasing no less than 60 breathtaking High Jewellery pieces. Since 2007, the Collection has grown by one piece each year, matching the number of Festival editions. For the upcoming 70th Anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival, Chopard pushes creative boundaries once again, presenting a Red Carpet Collection of 70 superb pieces, adorning the world’s stars during the iconic 'climbing the steps'.

2013 - The Journey to Sustainable Luxury

Inspiring figure and dear friend of the Maison, Livia Firth, Founder of the Green Carpet Challenge, and Caroline Scheufele announced the launch of the Journey to Sustainable Luxury. This project aims to promote sustainable luxury, and is illustrated at Chopard by the Green Carpet High Jewellery Collection, crafted from ethical Fairmined gold and diamonds sourced from a supplier certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). In line with this approach, Chopard has been crafting the legendary Palme d'Or since 2014 in a traceable metal, respectful both of people and of the environment.



2017 - Twenty Years of Glamour and Cinematic Emotions

Over the past 20 years, one of the most outstanding performances has been the iconic climbing of the steps with the greatest film stars adorned in Chopard. Global celebrities like Cate Blanchett, Julianne Moore, Sharon Stone, Scarlett Johansson, Lupita Nyong'o, Marion Cotillard, Catherine Deneuve and Freida Pinto — to name a few — have gracefully enchanted the Cannes red carpet in a ballet of silk and diamonds. In honour of the 70th Edition, a photographic exhibition pays a tribute to these magical moments on the terrace of Chez Albane.

A Sparkly Dress for the Palme d'Or

On this extraordinary anniversary, the emblematic leaf deserved a dress as stunning as the stars adorned in Chopard’s magnificent sets. The Palme d'Or shines its own light with a cloud of diamonds studded in its ethical gold certified Fairmined. This unique trophy will be awarded to one of the nominees during the Closing Ceremony on May 28th.

Can't Miss Events

Among all the sparkling events organized during the Cannes Film Festival, Chopard's Space Party will surprise its guests, bringing them into a unique cosmic dimension. And because Gentlemen want to have fun as well, London's famous Annabel's club made the trip to La Croisette to organize for the third consecutive year a Gentlemen's Night, where Chopard watches will be the objects of desire.
