Behind the camera, she chose one of the most gifted directors in the world of contemporary cinema to orchestrate the encounter between Julia Roberts and Happy Diamonds. Through the prism of his entrancing vision Xavier Dolan has amply succeeded in revealing, the Joie de Vivre inherent to Chopard’s spirit.
The result is a film brimming with vitality and pervaded by a joyful, free-spirited vibe. The coherent and meticulous choice of the muse, director, choreography, music, photography and styling brilliantly showcases the dance of the Maison's cherished diamonds.

[Director] First question. Hi.
- Hi
[Music playing]
Am I looking at you down there?
- Looking at this camera
OK. Is this the dating game?
Are we on the dating game?
- Yes
First question: Something
that makes you happy instantly?
Sunrise.
- The sunrise
Well, ‘instantly’
is very specific.
Yeah or. Yeah or. Yeah.
[Julia Roberts does different intonations for each "Yeah"]
- Your happy movie?
The Philadelphia Story
is a movie that makes me happy,
to think about, or watch, or …
[Typing on keyboard]
Happiness tip number one:
to be kind to others.
That always makes
people feel happy.
Number two would be:
surround yourself with loving,
kind, compassionate people
and three would be:
kissing, followed by
dancing as a close second.
[Typing on keyboard]
Depth, soulfulness
and just
a real personal strength.
- Your greatest extravagance?
Travel.
- What makes you laugh?
Cleverness.
Not so much things
that are funny
but things that are clever.
A thoughtful thread to humor.
[Typing on keyboard]
I dunno,
something’s gonna happen!
[Typing on keyboard]
There is something about
looking at a watch that...
every time you look at it
kind of…
jangling balls,
these sparkling diamonds…
pretty rad.
It’s good stuff.
[Typing on keyboard]
Being comfortable
in your convictions,
in sharing your convictions
with those around you.
Not all women have
those liberties, and...
I am very grateful
that I have them.
- How important to you
is responsible luxury?
Well, I would say
the idea of responsible luxury
is something that not enough
brands pay attention to,
and the thing with...
a house like Chopard
for them to really have,
sort of, pioneered an idea of...
having a conscience
leads a charge and an example
for other brands to follow.
[Typing on keyboard]
Chopard just represents
this timeless idea of
elegance and sparkle and,
you know,
lady-likeness.
You know, you think
‘When I grow up, I wanna be...
dripping in watches
and earrings from Chopard’.
And look at me: I’m all grown up.
- Your favorite motto?
Probably the motto
that I repeat the most is
‘No way out but through’.
- What’s your present
state of mind?
I’m really happy right now.
It’s been such a beautiful day
and I have felt such
a really great sense of kinship
that I hadn’t expected today,
so I’m super happy!
- So am I, so are we!
[Julia Roberts in French]
C’est fini ? Let’s go.

[A technician] Mark!
[Gentle music playing]
Sorry! So it begins!
[Typing on keyboard]
I was really flattered and, I think,
a bit intimidated too, because...
I’ve never done an advert before.
So my reaction was that I felt “happy”!
[Typing on keyboard]
It definitely gave it a whole new meaning.
She’s been important to my life and my story,
particularly with Erin Brockovich.
So knowing I was going to be
lucky enough to work with her
was obviously exciting for me.
[Typing on keyboard]
Conceptually, something was already there,
a guiding principle about letting go,
ease, freedom,
so everything artistic
and esthetic was naturally
going to align with that.
We needed, both in terms
of costumes and lighting,
something simple, light, accessible, human.
I keep doing this with my hands...!
[He grunts]
It’s quite rare to work with a luxury brand
that has an ecological
and ethical conscience.
A house like Chopard has
this kind of sensitivity,
this concern
for the environment, for its staff,
for the way it manufactures
and produces.
And that makes them
people you want to work with
because they have principles.
[Music playing] (On-screen text: Chopard Presents) (Caroline Scheufele is getting ready for the shoot, getting her makeup applied, arranging her jewelry, she arrives on set into the light) (She laughs) (On-screen text: My happy talk X Caroline Scheufele) [Sound of a projector turning on.] (She claps her hands) [Caroline Scheufele] When we first said that we were going to launch a Happy Diamonds campaign, the team said, well, we need... it would be nice to have an ambassadress or ambassadresses with a beautiful smile. So I immediately said Julia Roberts! She has the most beautiful smile on the planet. Who doesn't like Pretty Woman? Who wouldn’t like to be Pretty Woman? And I think she's also the type of actress that shines from inside out, she is a happy person. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: What is your secret to Happiness?) First of all, I think you have to be happy with yourself, because if you're not happy with yourself, you cannot give happiness. I always see the glass half full, not half empty. Waking up in a good mood, going to work in a good mood, bringing some positivity to your team, I think, is essential. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: Why did you choose Xavier Dolan to direct Julia Roberts?) I heard of him through the film festival in Cannes. He is one of the darlings of the film festival, one of the youngest directors. He was also immediately enchanted. This was a very good choice. The end result, I think, is great. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: Where do Happy Diamonds come from?) Actually, the Happy Diamonds concept has existed for much longer than I have been with the company. The inventor of the name Happy Diamonds is actually my mum because she said: "When a person is free, they're happy. So when a diamond is free, it's happy." But it has always fascinated me how these little diamonds spin around. We actually like to say they're dancing within the pieces of jewellery or the watches, or the Happy Sport. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: Can you tell us the story of the Happy Clown) I was very surprised because I was still in school when I designed that little clown. A clown because I used to love to go to the circus. So, I designed the little clown with diamonds in the tummy because the classical Happy Diamonds already existed. And my father, who saw that little design, produced it for me as a surprise for Christmas. And I thought it was a unique piece but that was not the end of it. So, one time I went to the workshop and I saw lots of clowns. I said: "Daddy, what's that?" He said: "You won't understand. You will understand this later, this is commercial." So that's really the beginning of the jewellery. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: What did you learn from your Father?) The first thing my father taught me to do was how to tell the time. Before the ABC, I had to know how to tell the time. So, once he came back from a trip in America and he had been to Disneyland, he brought me this Mickey Mouse watch. And that's how I learnt how to tell the time. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: Why did you create the Happy Sport watch?) When I invented the Happy Sport, it was mostly because I was doing a lot of sports. That's why the name Sport is there. At Chopard we had the St. Moritz, which was a cool sporty watch. But for me, there was this sort of... sparkle missing, I really wanted something with a bit of sparkle that you could wear for 24 hours, meaning you can go swimming, waterskiing, play tennis, go shopping, take the kids to school, go to the office. And if you have no time, you're dressed because you have little diamonds running around in the cocktail. So, that, for me, was the free spirit, because today's women are always busy doing something, whether it's taking care of six kids or charitable work, whether it’s travelling or working. And this watch is just perfect for it. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: Was it considered to be a crazy idea?) This is a crazy idea, to put diamonds in a steel case. Diamonds are normally hosted in white gold or in platinum. I said: "Where is it written that I can't put them in steel?" "No, it's not a noble metal. It's not a precious metal." And I said: "Yeah, but it's cool, it's young, it's fun and you can wear it around the clock." I really had to fight my way through with this watch. But I'm a very persistent person. For me, no is not an answer. And if you tell me no, I double down. And when it came to producing it, it was another challenge because everyone said: "She's gone a bit crazy." Someone in the workshop said: "For every watch that you sell, I will give you a rose." We had this little bet going on with the manager of the workshop, the head of the workshop. And he kept his promise, one sunny morning, I received a beautiful rose tree for my garden. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: Why were the dancing diamonds so innovative?) Originally, in the classical Happy Diamonds, the diamonds were just allowed to spin around the case. So, they were somehow in a circle. In the Happy Sport, they're totally free, because they're floating over the watch. This was a challenge, a technical challenge, because we had to find the aesthetic look between... the case, the dial, the first sapphire crystal, the layer of Happy Diamonds and the next sapphire crystal, which makes it quite... complicated for aesthetics. For me, the Happy Diamonds are... Actually, when you say happy, that says it all. They're free. They're actually free. They're not stuck in a setting where they can't move. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: Were you expecting it to become an icon of the Maison?) At this time, I was really not thinking of shaking the watchmaking business, I was just doing my job, which is my passion, creating and designing. And maybe I came up with something very unusual, unexpected. But these are often the best creations. But I didn't know that we would come this far with that watch. Sometimes, you know, I meet new clients, maybe they come into another sector of Chopard, High Jewellery, but they are all somehow connected to Chopard, through the Happy Diamonds So somehow the Happy Diamonds open the doors to Chopard. And I see a lot of young girls wearing it or wanting it for their graduation. It's a watch that somehow really goes through generations. And I think this is how icons are born, when you pass on something from grandmother to mother, and from mother to daughter. I was not aware when I first designed it that this would be the case. So that makes me feel a little bit proud. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: What inspired you to create the Happy Hearts collection?) It happened in a very boring marketing meeting. I was so bored, and when I get bored, I start designing. So, I doodled around. We had these long chains already, with the simple hearts, empty hearts, which I also designed. And I said, what about if I just give it some colour? So, I started colouring the hearts. And actually, like many times, things are really at your doorstep and you don't see them. And that's how it came up. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: What do you look for in jewellery?) Jewellery should be nice to touch, like the clown I'm touching now. It also has to be a feel-good... a feel-good moment when you touch it. It's not just the look, it's also the touch. I always do a stocking test. I take a pair of silk stockings and I rub them over it. And if the silk stocking doesn't break, it means the setting is good. [Sound of a projector] (On-screen text: How do you wear your own Happy Sport?) I wear the Happy Sport, which is one of my favourites, I've actually put on the First today, which is the First re-edition, limited edition. There's a big difference between this one and the first one, as it now has an in-house automatic movement. But I do mix and mismatch. You see, I have the Happy Diamonds bangles and some beautiful diamond bracelets. I have the iconic clown today, so I think you can really dress it up and dress it down. This is the beauty of the Happy Sport. Even the steel one, you can easily wear it with a diamond ring. [Bye bye] (On-screen text: Diamonds are happier when they are free) (Diamonds slide around the text) (On-screen text: Chopard)
